1. Can you tell me about yourself?

  • It’s okay to talk about your hobbies and interests but keep it brief. Try and focus on related work experience. Remember having related work experience will put you ahead of the competition.

2. Why do you want to work for Suncor?

  • State you would like to grow your career in the oil and gas industry and feel Suncor is a great place to do it. Follow up with the fact that you are impressed with Suncor’s awards which include

3. What is your greatest strength?

  • The best way to respond to this question is to describe your skills and experience that directly correlate with the job you are applying for. Therefore review the job description and reassure the interviewer that you have the experience and skills to do the job.

4. What is your greatest weakness?

  • You should not deny you have a weakness or state strengths as a weakness (I am a perfectionist, or I work too hard and neglect my friends and family). Consider a weakness that is required but not critical for the job and state that as your weakness.
  • When you state your weakness make sure you say what you are doing to overcome that weakness. For example, I have a fear of public speaking and I have enrolled in a public speaking class to overcome my fear.

5. What can you tell us about Suncor?

  • Suncor is a Canadian Energy company based in Calgary Alberta.
  • The company was founded in 1919 in Montreal Quebec.
  • Suncor produces synthetic crude from oil sands.
  • They produce oil and natural gas in Western Canada, and Colorado, and offshore drilling in Eastern Canada.
  • Suncor’s refineries are in Edmonton AB, Sarnia ON, Montreal QC, and Commerce City CO.
  • They are the world’s largest producer of bitumen.
  • In Canada, Suncor sells gasoline through Petro Canada which it acquired in 2009.
  • In the United States, it operates retail outlets in Colorado under the Shell and Philips 66 brands.

6. Why should we hire you?

  • Look at the job description and find the essential skills and experience required to do the job. Reassure the interviewer that you have the skills and expertise necessary to do the position. Note your answer needs to demonstrate that you are the solution to the employer’s problem (a vacancy on their team) and that you are the best person for the role.

7. Where do you see yourself in five years?

  • Have a look at jobs on Suncor’s website or jobs in the oil and gas industry and find a position you can see yourself doing in five years. You will sound like a good fit for Suncor if you are willing to work in the oil and gas industry for the long haul.
  • Make sure you can back up your five-year goal with a plan on what you are doing to achieve it.

8. What are your salary expectations?

  • This is a stressful question because if you ask for too much you will not get the job, and if you ask for too little they will gladly underpay you.
  • Be sure to research salary expectations for your role before you go into the interview. There are plenty of sites that will discuss salary ranges.
  • If you don’t know what to say then ask what the salary range is?  You can then counter with the high end of the range. 

9. Why did you leave your last job?

Let’s first discuss what not to say!

  • Do not say anything negative about your previous employer.
  • Do not say for money. 
  • The commute was too long.

“I enjoyed my time at my last job, however, I have outgrown my current role and I am looking for new challenges.”

10. Do you have any questions for us?

Most Suncor energy interview questions will end with do you have any questions for us? Here are a few prepared questions but don’t be afraid to ask questions during the interview.

  • What do you like best about working here? 
  • How would you describe your ideal candidate for this position? 
  • If I were to start tomorrow what would be my top priority? 
  • What is the history of this position? 
  • What about this position is the most important? 
  • How would you measure my success, and what could I do to succeed in your expectations? 
  • Which part of the position has the steepest learning curve? What can I do to get up to speed quickly?

SUNCOR BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Behavioral Interview Questions are questions about how you handled difficult situations at work.

These questions are designed to see how you reacted in the past, as your past performance is a strong indicator of how you will behave in the future.

We can’t guarantee what behavioral interview questions will be asked at Suncor. It is recommended you go through your resume list the conflicts, accomplishments, and failures and you had at work. Make sure answers to all questions have a positive outcome.

Name a time you disagreed with a coworker or manager and what was the outcome?

It is only natural to have conflict at work.  What is important is how you and your colleague come up with a positive outcome.

Don’t

  • Don’t discuss negative conflicts (for example, don’t mention how you would argue with your boss for being late).
  • Make sure you don’t discuss a situation where the outcome wasn’t positive.

Do

  • Make the conflict about something positive like conflict on how to make a business process better.

What was your greatest accomplishment in your last job? 

There should be very little hesitation when you answer this question.

If you hesitate the interviewer may think you don’t care

But an interview can be nerve-racking and it is quite possible you can draw a blank stare at this question.

Below are some examples I came up with:

  • Perhaps you saved your last/current company money or
  • Maybe you improved the quality of your work and the work of others,
  • Perhaps you helped a co-worker out personally and they were able to continue their work.

Can you tell me about a time you failed?

  • Everyone fails but what did you learn about it? For example, in university, I failed my calculus midterm. It was my first year of university and I realized I was not managing my workload effectively. I got into the habit of spending 30 minutes a day doing calculus and I was able to get 80 percent in my next midterm.

Can you tell me about a time you motivated someone?

  • Try and think of a time that you motivated someone and what was the outcome. Companies love people that are highly motivated.

SUNCOR VIDEO INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

  • If you have a video interview make sure you find a quiet room with no distractions. Make sure the room is clean and prepare the same way you would for an in-person interview.
