About No Frills

  • No Frills is a Canadian discount supermarket.
  • The first No Frills opened in July 1978 in East York, Ontario.
  • The original No Frills store had no product advertising, store displays, meat counter, or clerks to bag groceries, and you had to bring your own bags or pay 3 cents for each.
  • Loblaws owns No Frills.
  • In 1987, Loblaws turned No Frills stores into franchised operations. Owners proudly display their names on their stores. For example, No Frills in Etobicoke is Jim & Maria’s No Frills.
  • No Frills introduced some highly innovative retailing concepts to Canadian consumers.
  • Examples include selling no-name products (the line of generic products launched by Loblaws) and passing on savings by leaving products on display in cardboard shipping cartons with the sides cut away.

Interviewers ask this question because they want to see someone who is goal-oriented and ambitious. They also want to find someone whose career goals match the business objective of No Frills—Retail.

  • Completes customer transactions accurately and efficiently at point-of-sale (skill: attention to detail)
  • Partners with selling and sales support associates to provide superior customer service i.e., assist customers, answer phones (skill: teamwork)

So, when asked why we should hire you as a cashier, state:

  • Mention that you have excellent communication skills that can be used to enhance the customer experience.
  • State that you are a quick learner and can learn any technology quickly.
  • Say you pay great attention to detail and will make sure all transactions are performed accurately and efficiently.
  • Finally, state that you have excellent teamwork skills, which will help sales support associates when possible.

Can you tell us when you went above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which generates more business. Try to think of a time you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the dessert place next door had it, and I was able to get it for them.   
  • For example, I worked at a fast-food chain in my last job.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant, and he had finished his meal.  It started to rain, and he was worried because he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain
