What can you tell us about No Frills?

About No Frills

  • No Frills is a Canadian discount supermarket.
  • The first No Frills opened in July 1978 in East York Ontario.
  • The original No Frills store had no product advertising, no store displays, no meat counter, no clerks to bag your groceries, and you had to bring your own bags or pay 3 cents for each.
  • No Frills is owned by Loblaws.
  • In 1987, Loblaws turned No Frills stores into franchised operations. Owners proudly display their names in their stores. For example, No Frills n Etobicoke is known as Jim & Maria’s No Frills.
  • No Frills introduced some highly innovative retailing concepts to Canadian consumers.
  • Examples include selling no name products (the line of generic products launched by Loblaws) and passing on savings by leaving products on display in their cardboard shipping cartons, with the sides cut away.

Why should we hire you?

  • Remember related work experience is key so if you have experience working in a supermarket, managing inventory, or working with customers mention that first.
  • State skills such as communication, ability to work under pressure, multitasking, etc.
  • If this is your first job don’t worry. Just say you have been focusing on school and now you are ready to prove yourself in the workforce.

What hours can you work?

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more flexible you are with your hours, the better chance you will have at landing the job.
  • State you understand if you need to work weekends and holidays.

What are your salary expectations?

  • This is a stressful question because if you ask for too much you will not get the job, and if you ask for too little they will gladly underpay you.
  • Be sure to research salary expectations for your role before you go into the interview. There are plenty of sites that will discuss salary ranges.
  • If you don’t know what to say then ask what the salary range is?  You can then counter with the high end of the range.

Why do you want to be a cashier?

  • Say you would like a job that keeps you active
  • Say you enjoy meeting with customers

Why should we hire you as a cashier?

For this question, you need to reread the job description and find the key skills they are looking for and convince the interviewer you those skills.  After rereading a sample job description below is what I found:

  • Takes ownership for enhancing the customer experience (skill: communication)
Leverages technology to facilitate the customer experience (skill: quick learner)
  • Completes customer transactions accurately and efficiently at point-of-sale (skill: attention to detail)
  • Partners with selling and sales support associates to provide superior customer service i.e., assist customers, answer phones (skill: teamwork)

So when asked why should we hire you as a cashier state:

  • Mention you have great communication skills which can be used to enhance customer experience.
  • State you are a quick learner and will be able to learn any technology quickly.
  • Say you pay great attention to detail and will make sure all transactions are performed accurately and efficiently.
  • Finally, state you have great teamwork skills and will help sales support associates when possible.

Tell us about a time you went above and beyond for a customer?

  • Customers love when you go above and beyond for them which will, in turn, generate more business. Try and think of a time you went above and beyond for a customer. For example, when I was a server at a restaurant we did not have a particular dessert in the restaurant. Luckily the dessert next door had it and I was able to get it for them.
  • For example, in my last job I worked at a fast-food chain.  There was a senior citizen at the restaurant and he had finished his meal.  It started to rain and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily I had an umbrella, so I walked him to his car sheltering him from the rain.
